Biography

John Messerly practices in the areas of estate planning, probate and trust administration, probate litigation, and small business law.  He helps individuals and families with a variety of matters, including the preparation of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health care directives, and other estate planning documents; estate and gift tax planning; adoptions, guardianships, and conservatorships; special needs and supplemental needs trusts; and charitable giving.  He also works with individual- and family-owned businesses in areas such as incorporation, contracts, and buy-sell agreements.

Prior to joining the firm, John worked as an associate in the Tax, Trusts, and Estate Planning Department of Dorsey & Whitney LLP, and served as a law clerk to the Honorable James E. Gritzner of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

John grew up in Iowa, where he studied French, Political Science, and International studies, and also became a die-hard Cyclone. He went to law school at the University of Iowa College of Law, and now lives in Plymouth with is wife, Anna.  He enjoys watching and playing sports, finding new ethnic restaurants, and being a part of his church family. In the summer, John likes to spend his time counseling at a nonprofit, nondenominational youth camp in upper Minnesota.
